New York City just elected a self-described socialist as mayor, and Sen. Ted Cruz says it proves the Democratic Party has gone off the deep end — but is Cruz calling it straight, or going too far?
Story Snapshot
- Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayor’s race and openly calls himself a democratic socialist.
- Sen. Ted Cruz labeled Mamdani a “full-on communist” and “jihadist” — claims Mamdani flatly denies.
- Mamdani said at a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference that his long-term goal is “seizing the means of production.”
- Cruz’s “jihadist” label has no factual backing in the public record and hurt the credibility of his broader argument.
A Socialist Wins New York City
Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayor’s race and wasted no time telling voters exactly what he is. He calls himself a democratic socialist and says he will govern that way. His campaign platform pushed a rent freeze, city-owned grocery stores, and universal childcare. At his inauguration, he declared, “I will govern as a democratic socialist.” [13] For conservatives watching from the outside, the result was a gut punch — one of the world’s most powerful cities now run by someone who openly rejects free-market principles.
Cruz jumped on the results fast. On election day, he posted a manipulated ballot image on social media calling Mamdani an “actual communist” and a “Karl Marx-loving, America-hating jihadist.” [1] He followed that up on Fox News, saying Mamdani is “not just a mere socialist” but “something far worse” — a Marxist. [2] Cruz pointed to a 2021 speech Mamdani gave at a Young Democratic Socialists of America conference, where Mamdani said the long-term “end goal” was “seizing the means of production.” That phrase is straight out of Karl Marx’s playbook, and Cruz used it to argue Mamdani is more radical than he lets on.
Where Cruz Gets It Right — and Where He Goes Too Far
Cruz has a real point worth taking seriously. Mamdani did say “seizing the means of production” is his end goal. [2] That is not just feel-good progressive talk — it describes government taking control of private businesses. City-owned grocery stores are a small step in that direction. The Cato Institute warned that Mamdani’s socialist plans would make New York City’s already serious economic problems worse. [14] Conservatives are right to sound the alarm when a major American city moves toward government control of the economy.
But Cruz also went further than the facts support. Mamdani directly denied being a communist in an NBC News interview, saying simply, “No, I am not.” [1] The Democratic Socialists of America, the group Mamdani belongs to, does not call for violent revolution. It seeks its goals through elections and democratic votes. More importantly, Cruz’s “jihadist” label has zero factual backing. No credible evidence in the public record shows Mamdani supports jihad. That kind of overreach gives Mamdani’s defenders an easy target and distracts from the legitimate concerns about his ideology.
Why This Still Matters for the Rest of America
Even if Cruz’s word choices were sloppy, the bigger picture he is painting is real. New York City’s Democrats did not just pick a moderate — they picked someone who openly wants government to run parts of the economy that private citizens currently control. [12] That is a genuine shift, and it is the direction the national Democratic Party’s activist base is pushing. Cruz warned that “Comrade Mamdani” represents the future of the Democratic Party. [4] Whether you agree with every word Cruz said or not, that warning deserves a serious look.

The bottom line: Mamdani’s own words — “seizing the means of production” — are radical by any reasonable American standard. Cruz is right to call that out loudly. But calling him a “jihadist” without evidence is a mistake that hands the left a distraction. Conservatives make a stronger case when they stick to what Mamdani actually said and let his own platform do the talking. His ideas are alarming enough on their own.
