UPS Announces Major Restructuring and Job Cuts
United Parcel Service (UPS) has announced a massive restructuring plan, dubbed “Network of the Future,” that will involve 20,000 layoffs and the closure of about 200 facilities across the country. The company says the move is a necessary response to a significant decline in parcel volume, which it attributes to a drop in deliveries from its largest customer, Amazon, as well as the impact of tariffs on global trade.
“The end result will be a much more efficient operation with less dependency on labor,” Nando Cesarone, President of U.S. Operations at UPS, said of the plan.
A “Hell of a Fight” with the Teamsters
The announcement was met with immediate and fierce opposition from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the powerful union that represents more than 300,000 UPS workers. The union argues that the layoffs could be a direct violation of their national contract, which was ratified in 2023.
A key provision of that five-year agreement requires UPS to create 30,000 new Teamsters jobs, with 7,500 of those being full-time positions. In a fiery statement, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien put the company on notice. “If the company intends to violate our contract or makes any attempt to go after hard-fought, good-paying Teamsters jobs, UPS will be in for a hell of a fight,” O’Brien declared, according to Yahoo News.
The Shadow of Automation
The clash comes as the Teamsters are engaged in a high-profile, aggressive campaign to unionize Amazon, making the union particularly sensitive to any moves it perceives as anti-labor. The dispute with UPS is also fueled by long-term fears about the impact of automation on the logistics industry.
As reported by the New York Post, UPS has been exploring a potential collaboration with the robotics startup Figure AI, raising concerns within the union that the “Network of the Future” is a plan to replace human workers with automated systems. The union has vowed to use all legal means to protect its members’ jobs and ensure the company honors its contractual obligations.
