Here We Go Again — Trump Impeach Talk Revived

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries just told NBC’s Kristen Welker that Democrats have not ruled out impeaching President Trump — raising the question of whether Democrats plan to spend the next two years chasing impeachment instead of governing.

Story Snapshot

  • Jeffries told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Democrats haven’t “ruled anything in or out” when it comes to impeaching Trump.
  • He admitted no caucus-wide conversation has taken place and pointed to oversight and war-powers tools as the immediate focus.
  • Democrats are already threatening to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem if Trump doesn’t fire her first.
  • Trump has fired back, calling for Jeffries’ own impeachment over remarks about the Supreme Court.

Jeffries Leaves the Door Open on Trump Impeachment

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” and declined to close the door on impeaching President Donald Trump. When host Kristen Welker pressed him directly, Jeffries said Democrats “haven’t ruled anything in or out in terms of accountability.” He also said the party had not yet held a caucus-wide discussion on the matter and that oversight tools were the more immediate focus.

The comment lit up social media quickly. Many conservatives saw it as proof that Democrats remain locked in a cycle of political revenge rather than focusing on real issues like the economy and border security. Jeffries is no stranger to impeachment — he served as one of the House impeachment managers during Trump’s first Senate trial and voted to impeach Trump a second time in January 2021.

Democrats Already Pushing More Impeachment Threats

The Trump impeachment talk isn’t the only impeachment threat Democrats are floating. Jeffries publicly warned in January 2026 that Democrats would start impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem if President Trump did not fire her. He made that threat directly on CNN, framing it as a response to what he called mismanagement at the department. The threat shows Democrats are using impeachment as a routine political weapon, not a last resort.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had also floated Trump impeachment talk before Jeffries was asked about it at a press briefing. Jeffries did not shut the idea down. Instead, he left room for it while steering the conversation toward congressional oversight and demanding the administration appear before Congress to answer questions. That kind of careful, non-committal language keeps the impeachment door open without committing to a formal vote.

Trump Fires Back — Calls for Jeffries’ Impeachment

President Trump did not stay quiet. After Jeffries called the Supreme Court “illegitimate” in remarks tied to a voting rights ruling, Trump called for Jeffries’ impeachment. Trump argued that attacking the legitimacy of the nation’s highest court crossed a line. The exchange shows how heated the back-and-forth between the White House and House Democrats has become in Trump’s second term.

From a conservative standpoint, this pattern is exhausting and familiar. Democrats spent much of Trump’s first term chasing impeachment instead of working with the administration. Now, just months into his second term, the same playbook is emerging. Voters who care about inflation, border security, and energy costs deserve a Congress focused on solutions — not one using impeachment as a fundraising tool and a way to keep the base fired up. Jeffries’ non-answer to Welker’s question signals that impeachment talk will likely stay alive as long as it keeps Democrats energized and donors writing checks.
