During a virtual briefing on Hurricane Milton on Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris found herself in the middle of controversy after an awkward hot mic moment. While National Weather Service Director Ken Graham was providing updates on the storm, Harris was seen covering her mouth and overheard saying, “It’s a live broadcast.” Immediately after, she posed a question to Graham about the storm, which had been downgraded from a Category 5 to a Category 4 hurricane.

The incident quickly caught the attention of social media critics, including Donald Trump’s campaign, which accused Harris of being fed questions by her aides. The Trump War Room account posted the clip on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Kamala can be heard telling an aide (who is feeding her questions) that it’s a ‘live broadcast’ before immediately asking the question. She’s a total fraud.”
Others chimed in, accusing the vice president of relying too much on scripted remarks. One X user wrote, “This lady doesn’t know what’s going on. Everything about her is scripted and fake.” Another described it as a “clear display of incompetence.”
Harris’s hot mic moment occurred during a briefing hosted by President Joe Biden, who was present in person, while Harris joined virtually. She appeared alongside Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, NOAA Director Ken Graham, and other officials from FEMA, the Coast Guard, and the National Hurricane Center.
The briefing was part of the administration’s efforts to update the public on the incoming Hurricane Milton and provide information on aid for areas still recovering from the deadly Hurricane Helene earlier this month.
While critics seized on the hot mic incident to question Harris’s credibility, her supporters dismissed the controversy, pointing out that it is common for officials to receive guidance during live events. However, the moment has reignited partisan debates over Harris’s competency and communication style as she navigates one of the administration’s many ongoing crises.
This is what she’s like as VP.
Imagine how bad it’ll be with her as president.
