Walmart Will Require All Customers Use Face Masks

( Walmart has announced that all of its stores in the United States will expect customers to wear face masks, and refuse entry to those who won’t wear them. The new rule will come into effect at the beginning of next week.

“To help bring consistency across stores and clubs, we will require all shoppers to wear a face covering starting Monday, July 20,” an official blog post from Wednesday reads. “This will give us time to inform customers and members of the changes, post signage and train associates on the new protocols.”

The statement continued by explaining that while they aren’t the first business to require face masks, they believes it’s a “simple step everyone can take for their safety and the safety of others” in their stories.

“According to the CDC, face coverings help decrease the spread of COVID-19, and because the virus can be spread by people who don’t have symptoms and don’t know they are infected, it’s critically important for everyone to wear a face covering in public and social distance.”

It’s a controversial decision and likely to cause continued heated debated online and in the media, but the truth of the matter is that masks are a double-edges sword. Some would argue that they don’t protect you from catching the virus as the virus is small enough to travel through cloth, and they would be right. However, others would also accurately argue that masks reduce the amount of aerosolized droplets leaving our mouth and nose, which does in turn reduce the spread of the virus.

Walmart said that to ensure people follow the policy, they will ensure their stores all have a single point of entry and members of their team will watch people entering. These members of staff will be known as “health ambassadors” and they will be given “special training to help make the process as smooth as possible for customers.”

The Walmart health ambassadors will be at the front of the store and wearing a black polo short. They will work with customers who arrive without a face covering and will come up with an alternative, whether that’s fashioning one out of clothes or perhaps even providing them.

One thing is for sure, and that’s that these ambassadors are probably going to have to deal with a lot of arguments.
