(PresidentialWire.com)- Ron DeSantis, the popular Republican Governor of Florida, gave a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Thursday. DeSantis was cheered by the audience as he detailed how he managed the COVID-19 pandemic in his state and criticized the authoritarian approach adopted by Democrats.
“Florida led when it counted, we led early on when the weight of the world was bearing down on his shoulders,” he told an audience of several thousand conservatives. “We understand what it means to be a leader, not just be a politician that twists in the wind but will be willing to make tough decisions.”
DeSantis doubled down on his position and suggested that the way his state handled the COVID-19 crisis – by favoring freedom over lockdowns – could serve as an example for the rest of the world. He also suggested that, had Florida not led the way in pushing people to take precautions and use their own common sense to protect themselves and others, the state and the rest of the country “could look like Canada or Australia.”

DeSantis is widely believed to be a possible contender for the 2024 presidential nomination. He has repeatedly come second behind former President Donald Trump in GOP polls, making him the most likely contender to win against Trump. However, with polls showing Trump with more than 50% support within the party already, DeSantis will have a real challenge on his hands going up against this Republican heavyweight.
