(PresidentialWire.com)- On Tuesday, the UK’s new prime minister, Liz Truss, met with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for the ceremonial transfer of power at Balmoral castle in Scotland.
Outgoing leader Boris Johnson formally offered his resignation to the queen at Balmoral after delivering his farewell address at 10 Downing Street in London earlier in the day. Shortly afterward, Liz Truss was formally appointed his successor during her audience with the Queen.
Truss, who was named the leader of the ruling Conservative Party on Monday, becomes the 15th prime minister to serve under Queen Elizabeth’s reign and the third female to hold the office in UK history.
This is the first time in the Queen’s 70-year reign that the handover of power, a ceremony known as “kissing hands,” took place away from Buckingham Palace in London. The 96-year-old monarch’s ongoing mobility problems prevented her from making the journey from Balmoral, where she spends the summer, down to London. So the politicians came to her.
The Queen was photographed leaning on a cane as she greeted her new PM.
And while she might look her age, Her Majesty appeared quite cheerful, smiling broadly as she shook hands with Truss.
