A Haven for Correction Officers
The New York Department of Corrections has taken a significant step towards improving the well-being of its staff by opening a wellness center specifically for guards at Rikers Island. Located in the Otis Bantum Correctional Center, this facility serves 800 uniformed staff members, providing them with a much-needed sanctuary from the stresses of their demanding jobs.
The wellness center is equipped with three main areas designed to cater to different aspects of officer well-being. A “serenity room” offers a quiet space for decompression after stressful incidents, featuring amenities such as a white noise machine, stress balls, and motivational artwork. The state-of-the-art gym boasts a full range of exercise equipment, promoting physical fitness as a form of stress relief. Additionally, a business center with computers is available for staff use, aiding in both stress relief and productivity.
The initiative underscores the Department of Corrections’ commitment to supporting the physical and emotional health of its officers. Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “Having these resources available to them on-island will better support our staff’s physical and emotional health and ensure they have increased opportunities to receive valuable training.”
“Our staff are our greatest resource. Investing in them is investing in safe jails,” Maginley-Liddie said.
Officer Testimonial and Future Plans
Correction Officer Christopher Curry, speaking about the new facility, praised its benefits.
“I can go in there and gather my thoughts and feel at ease and calm,” Curry said.
The success of this wellness center has prompted the Department of Corrections to plan similar facilities at other Rikers Island locations.
As Rikers Island continues to face scrutiny and calls for reform, initiatives like the wellness center represent a step towards addressing the needs of those who work within its walls.
It raises questions, though…
Is this really the best way to spend money in a prison?
