(PresidentialWire.com)- Michelle Obama, the former First Lady, used the time allocated to her at the Democratic National Convention to address virtual crowds about children being “thrown into cages” under President Donald Trump’s administration. Awkwardly, Michelle didn’t seem to remember that the practice of separating families of illegal immigrants at the border and putting children behind bars was something her husband pioneered during his time as president.
Americans have watched in horror as “children are torn from their families and thrown into cages,” she claimed. Obama was clearly trying to appeal to the emotions of American voters, but must have hoped that people wouldn’t do any digging into the claims. If they did, they would discover that not only is her husband guilty of doing exactly the same, but that the myth of throwing people into cages is completely baseless.
When illegal aliens are caught crossing the border, children are often separated from the adults to ensure that they are not being trafficked. It is a measure taken to ensure that the children do not become victims to sexual predators or are not trafficked and sold upon arrival in the United States. Sadly, it is very common.
Furthermore, when this was happening under Barack Obama’s administration, the cages and living facilities for the illegal migrants were nowhere near as nice as they are now.
Even the Associated Press picked up on the baseless claims, offering a fact check and explaining the cages reference as “misleading” and something that the Democrats “have persistently distorted.”
“Trump used facilities that were built during the Obama-Biden administration to house children at the border,” the AP reports. “They are chain-link enclosures inside border facilities where migrants were temporarily housed, separated by sex and age.”
So, not exactly throwing people into cages.

The AP also reported that photos circulated online during the height of Trump’s zero-tolerance policy at the U.S.-Mexico border, but the photos that were shared were actually from 2014. During the Obama administration.
Another reason why it’s factually incorrect is that in many instances families voluntarily split while illegally crossing the border. The Democrats seem to only care about these families if they can use them in a way that might potentially make the Republicans look bad.
Imagine having such a depressing ticket for the presidential election that you have to resort to lies to try and win!
