Confrontation at ICE Facility
On May 9, 2025, tensions erupted outside Delaney Hall, a Newark-based ICE detention facility, when Democratic lawmakers and Mayor Ras Baraka attempted an unannounced inspection to protest its reopening under the Trump administration. According to NJ.com, Baraka was arrested for federal trespassing—a misdemeanor that could result in up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.
The lawmakers—Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver—deny any wrongdoing. DHS officials, however, allege that the group forcibly breached a gate and assaulted ICE personnel, claims that are reportedly backed by body camera footage.

DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told Politico, “We actually have body camera footage of these members of Congress assaulting these ICE enforcement officers, including body-slamming a female ICE officer.”
The Clash Inside the Facility
According to ABC News, the lawmakers claim they were conducting constitutionally protected oversight. “We have the right to conduct oversight on an unannounced basis,” said Congresswoman McIver, who described the scene as “chaotic and emotionally charged” due to the facility’s recent controversies.
Mayor Baraka defended his actions, stating he was “exercising my right and duty as an elected official.” Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba rejected this defense, declaring, “No one is above the law,” and said Baraka and others “committed trespass and ignored multiple warnings.”
Fallout and Political Divide
The incident has reignited fierce debates over immigration enforcement and federal overreach. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy denounced Baraka’s arrest, calling it a “politically motivated stunt,” while conservatives accused the Democrats of grandstanding.
As BBC News reported, the incident also shines a spotlight on the controversial reauthorization of Delaney Hall under GEO Group, which has been criticized for its private prison practices and alleged permit violations.
With the Trump administration hinting that “more arrests are likely,” the confrontation underscores the widening chasm between federal immigration enforcement and local resistance—turning Newark into ground zero in the ongoing national battle over immigration policy.
