DeSantis Pushes for Urgent Action
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is ramping up pressure on Republican legislators to take immediate action on illegal immigration. The governor is calling for a special legislative session to align Florida’s policies with federal mandates established under former President Donald Trump’s administration. DeSantis’s push comes in the wake of Trump’s recent reinstatement of several immigration policies, which have reportedly led to a 35% decrease in illegal immigrant encounters at the southern border.
Despite facing skepticism from GOP leaders, DeSantis remains adamant about proceeding with his campaign objectives. The governor warns that lawmakers could face political repercussions if they fail to act on his proposals during the special session.
House Speaker Daniel Perez and Senate President Ben Albritton have criticized the governor’s call for a special session as “premature” and “irresponsible.” They argue that these issues should be addressed during the regular legislative session in March. The GOP-controlled Legislature has shown no signs of taking action during the proposed five-day special session.
DeSantis’s key proposals include enforcing deportation cooperation, establishing criminal penalties for illegal entry, and expanding a migrant transport program.
In short, he supports enforcing the law.
The Governor also wants to repeal a law allowing children of undocumented migrants to pay resident tuition rates at state colleges and universities.
“It’s not premature. Now’s the time to act,” Governor Ron DeSantis said, rejecting claims that the session is unnecessary at this time.
Beyond immigration, DeSantis’s broader political agenda encompasses tackling issues related to hurricane recovery, HOA fees, and electoral integrity. The Governor has been actively campaigning for support, including press conferences and media appearances, to pressure legislators into action.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has praised DeSantis’s efforts and encouraged other Governors to follow his example. Trump’s recent actions at the federal level, including initiating mass deportations and declaring a border emergency, have set the stage for DeSantis’s push at the state level.
If the president supports him, the rest of the Republican Party should, too.
