(PresidentialWire.com)- Louis DeJoy, the Postmaster General, confirmed this week that the FBI is investigating campaign fundraising efforts at New Breed Logistics, the North Carolina-based company he used to run.
Mark Carallo, a spokesman for DeJoy, told the press that the Postmaster General has learned that the Department of Justice is investigating campaign contributions made by employees who worked for him previously, but said that he has “always been scrupulous” in adhering to all campaign contribution laws.
Interestingly, Carallo said that DeJoy had never “knowingly” violated campaign fundraising laws, giving the chief executive officer of the United States Postal Service some level of plausible deniability if it turns out that there were violations of the law at his former company.
Corallo also said that an inquiry by the Postal Service Inspector General gave DeJoy a “clean bill of health” on divestment and disclosure issues and that he expects the FBI will conclude the same.
In case you missed this story, it all started in September last year when a report from The Washington Post suggested that employees at DeJoy’s former business claimed that they were pressured by their boss, or his aides, to contribute to Republican candidates or to attend political fundraising events. Employees claimed that they were paid back for making contributions in the form of bonuses.
To confirm the legitimacy of the claims, current and former employees have been interviewed by FBI agents and DeJoy has been issued a subpoena.
It’s unclear whether the accusations are true, but given that DeJoy has regularly been targeted by left-wing activists, it seems fairly plausible that this is part of a witch hunt campaign. DeJoy drew criticism from far-left activists for advancing cost-cutting measures in the USPS during the Trump administration – a move designed to protect the USPS and keep it competitive into the future.
We’ll report back on the result of the FBI inquiries…let’s hope there are no political shenanigans…
