A movie fan made it past security at the Toronto International Film Festival and stunned star Angelina Jolie by hugging her. A clip of the incident went viral online and showed a young woman weaving through a crowd and past security as admirers surrounded the star. When she reached the actress, the fan threw her arms around her while security dashed to pull her away. Jolie, however, appeared to style out the incident and spoke to the fan before officers removed her from the scene.
Jolie was in Toronto for the premiere of her movie Without Blood, which she wrote and directed. Starring Salma Hayek, the film explores the impact of war and the associated personal traumas. It is the latest in a series of war movies Jolie has directed, including Unbroken in 2014 and They Killed My Father in 2017. In a recent interview, the 49-year-old star said she is attracted to war films because they reveal humanity at its worst and display the “extremes of the human condition.”
Ms. Jolie believes that the purpose of art is to explore human behavior and what it means to be a human being. She argues that we must examine how we conduct ourselves and how we deal with the pain we experience. Salma Hayek agrees and says filming Without Blood was very challenging. Hayek stated that she was “afraid” to play the part because her character endures so much suffering. The 58-year-old actress said she came face to face with her own personal trauma as she related to her character. “We’ve all been tossed aside and not seen or abused in one way or another,” she said.
Hayek and Jolie discussed the friendship they developed while filming Without Blood and have already pledged to work together in the future. Ms. Hayek said she had “never felt so valued” as an actress, adding that Jolie knew she was suitable for the role even when she had her own doubts. Ms. Hayek confirmed that she will direct a movie that “just came” into her head, and Jolie has agreed to “take her by the hand” and help with production. “I wasn’t really supposed to tell you that,” she added.
