Bribery Scandal Unveiled
Angelique Lee, a once-respected Jackson Ward 2 councilwoman, has found herself at the center of a major scandal. Investigations revealed she received $19,000 in cash and a slew of luxury items, including Valentino shoes and a Christian Louboutin handbag, from February to March 2024.
A corrupt Democrat? Surely not!
The bribe was allegedly given in exchange for her votes supporting a fictitious real estate development project.

The development project was, however, a setup orchestrated by two undercover FBI agents posing as developers. They aimed to expose any unethical dealings, and the scheme worked as planned. Lee’s actions have drawn significant public outrage, highlighting the pervasive issue of political favoritism influenced by wealth.

Luxuries at a Cost
As details emerged, it was clear how deep the corruption ran. Bribes comprised not just cash but also luxury items, emphasizing the violation of ethical standards entrusted to elected officials. This includes high-end footwear from Valentino and other designer goods totaling thousands of dollars.
Lee’s actions were brought to light during a secretly recorded dinner where she accepted $3,000 in cash from the agents. The investigation even revealed her use of a provided credit card for a $6,000 shopping spree at a luxury store.
The Fallout and Future
Lee’s wrongdoing didn’t end at personal gains. Notably, she agreed to shut down a road to facilitate the so-called hotel development at the Jackson Convention Complex. The FBI’s operation not only led to her arrest but also underscored the existing void of integrity in parts of government dealings.
Following the exposure, Lee surrendered all the illicit items. Notably, investigators recovered these high-ticket items in a May raid, leaving only a sweatshirt and perfume uncollected. Forced to resign in August 2024, she now faces harsh penalties—a possible five-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine, though the sentencing date remains undetermined.
