DeSantis Says Second Building May Be Evacuated

( Popular Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis said on Saturday that the “sister building” of the condo structure that collapsed last week could be evacuated as a precaution to protect hundreds more Floridian lives.

The populist governor, who is quickly becoming a favorite Republican candidate for 2024 presidential nominee, said that local officials are looking into evacuating the residents of a Surfside, Florida, condo structure which was built in the same style as the structure that collapsed last week.

The Champlain Towers North residents have stayed in their buildings since the Champlain Towers South collapsed last week. Over 150 people are still accounted for and are believed to be trapped underneath the rubble of the building, and an unknown number of people have died.

During a press conference over the weekend, DeSantis responded to questions from the press about plans to ensure the safety of those living in the north tower. He revealed that he had a conversation with the Mayor of Surfside, Charles Burkett, who said that people were recommended to leave.

He noted that the building was made by the same designer, but that the decision to evacuate the residents is a decision that the mayor would need to make.

He also stressed that he didn’t know whether there were any specific indications that the north building has the same structural problems as the south tower, but given that they are the same age and built in the same design, it is something to think about.
