(PresidentialWire.com)- President Biden will be traveling to Saudi Arabia this month right at a time when the United States’ relationship with the oil-rich kingdom is at its worst, in large part due to Joe Biden.
As part of the Democrat Party’s push to realign the Middle East toward Iran, candidate Joe Biden spent a great deal of time attacking Saudi Arabia, as a “pariah” state. As part of that effort, the Democrats, aided by the media, went all-in attacking the Saudis over the murder of Qatari/Muslim Brotherhood asset, faux “journalist” Jamal Khashoggi.
But now that Biden needs Saudi Arabia, the full-court-press attacks on the oil-rich kingdom over Khashoggi have all but evaporated.
Progressives and human rights activists were livid that the White House was no longer exploiting the Qatari influence operation surrounding the death of Khashoggi. Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard described the about-face on Saudi Arabia as a “betrayal for Jamal Khashoggi, for Yemen, and a betrayal of what the Democratic party stood for over the last three years.”
Agnes Callamard must not understand the nature of Democrat Party politics.
Sure, Biden vowed to make Saudi Arabia pay for Khashoggi’s death during the 2020 election campaign. Khashoggi was a useful weapon to exploit against the Trump administration.
But Trump is gone. Biden is President. And right now, America is experiencing record gas prices, and Biden’s approval rating is cratering because of it.
Biden needs Saudi Arabia now, so flogging Khashoggi’s death is no longer useful.
At the same time, the White House knows the radical base and progressive lawmakers see Saudi Arabia as an enemy, which may explain why, during his press conference after the G-7, the president appeared to blame Israel for his decision to visit Saudi Arabia.
Biden told reporters that his trip to the Middle East isn’t about oil production, but about deepening Israel’s integration in the region which he thinks is good for Israel’s security. He added that this was why it was so important to Israeli leaders that he go to Saudi Arabia.
As a way to assure his radical base that he still hates the kingdom, Biden told reporters that he is also going to Saudi Arabia to “reduce the deaths and the war that’s occurring in Yemen.”
