Deadly 4th of July Attack in Huntington Beach Kills Two, Injures Three

A 26-year-old was arrested on murder and attempted murder charges in connection to a stabbing attack in Huntington Beach on the evening of July 4 that left two people dead and another three hospitalized.

Huntington Beach Police confirmed that Logan Christopher Kelley of Huntington Beach was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder at 11:30 p.m. on July 4.

According to Huntington Beach Public Affairs Manager Jennifer Carey, officers were called to a scene outside of a multi-family residence at about 11:15 p.m. on the Fourth of July after receiving reports of an alleged assault.

Responding officers found several wounded individuals, three of whom were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” Carey said. Two other victims “succumbed to their injuries.”

While Carey did not say whether the incident occurred at a July 4 celebration, one resident, who knows one of the victims, told the Associated Press that the attack began during an informal holiday gathering among residents. The crime scene included a cooler, spent fireworks, and chairs.

Investigators were still processing the crime scene on Friday, however, Carey said that the police did not believe that there was an ongoing threat to public safety from the incident. At the same time, investigators have not ruled out the possibility that other suspects might have been involved in the attack.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office said last Friday that charges against Kelley would likely be filed on Monday.

The medical examiner’s office has not released any details about the two victims killed in the July 4 stabbing attack.

Historically, the July Fourth holiday is one of the country’s deadliest days of the year.

At least 18 people were killed during the extended Independence Day holiday weekend, including 11 in the city of Chicago alone. Dozens more were injured nationwide.
