Coronavirus Antibody Tests Could Be Available Within A Week

(PresidentialWire.Com)- Antibody tests that can prove who has already been infected with coronavirus will be available for people to take soon.
That’s according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases. Fauci, who has been a central figure representing the medical community during the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S., said the antibody tests would be run in parallel with tests to identify who currently has coronavirus.
As he said on CNN Friday morning:
“Within a period of a week or so, we’re going to have a rather large number of tests that are available.”
The Food and Drug Administration approved the first test to detect coronavirus antibodies last week. The current tests that are being used to determine whether a person currently has coronavirus identifies viral NRA.
Once a person has recovered from coronavirus, that RNA is no longer present in the body. What that recovered person will have, however, are antibodies that fight off the virus circulating in their blood. The test is done by taking a blood sample, and results are typically available within 15 to 20 minutes, according to the FDA.
One reason why the antibody test is desired is to correctly identify all people who have had COVID-19. These people who have had it and recovered are thought to have immunity to it, although it isn’t clear whether that immunity is complete and forever, a Live Science report said.
Still, Fauci said the federal government is discussing whether to give out immunity certificates to those who take the antibody test and are found to have had and recovered from COVID-19. He said it might “have some merit under certain circumstances.
“It’s one of those things that we talk about when we want to make sure that we know who the vulnerable people are and not.”
The antibody tests could be particularly important for healthcare workers and others who are fighting the coronavirus on the frontline. As he said:
“If their antibody test is positive, one can formulate strategies about whether or not they would be at risk or vulnerable to getting re-infected. This would be important for healthcare workers, for first-line fighters.”
On Friday, Fauci also declined to name a specific date when the United States could begin to relax restrictions and re-open businesses. As he said on CNN:
“The virus kind of decides whether or not it’s going to be appropriate to open or not. I would want to see a clear indication that you are very, very clearly and strongly going in the right direction. Because the one thing you don’t want to do is you don’t want to get out there prematurely and wind up back in the same situation.”
The doctor stressed that people should continue practicing social distancing, especially as the urge to come together this week to celebrate Passover and Easter is strong. If people were to let down their guard, it’s possible another wave of the outbreak could happen.
